The behavior of /24 vs /32 addresses when using iptables

Community iconc/linux@lemmy.ml by
emotional_soup_88@programming.dev

I added a rule to accept connections from 192.168.1.135/24, since my router is configured to hand out /24 addresses. Then, iptables -L -v showed that connections from 192.168.1.0/24 are accepted. When I change the rule to accept connections from .135/32 - or from .135 without specifying the subnet -, it not only works as intended, but it also resolves the hostname correctly.

Swedish government wants to strengthen ties with American tech giants (omni.se)

Community iconc/buyfromeu@feddit.org by

“The Swedish government wants to strengthen ties with US tech giants, despite the Trump administration’s potential influence over these companies. This is according to Minister for Public Administration Erik Slottner (KD) in Ny Teknik. “What is happening in the US is rather proof that we need to have a strong relationship with these tech companies – perhaps even stronger than we have today. Europe is an important market for them, and they are very keen to have a good relationship with us.” He mentions Google, for example, as a partner he wants to continue to have on his digitalization council.”

Editing PDFs contents

Hi guys! I’m considering some tool to edit the texts and images within a PDF. What would be some decent recommendations? So far I think the only with a semblance of working has been Libreoffice Draw, but it messed the formatting quite a lot (the arrangement is very much off in many pages, the text splits incorrectly, some images pop up duplicated and so on). But so far it’s the only one I’ve seen actually allowing me to play with the PDF contents. Are there any other/better options?

Is there an application that stabilizes the volume level of downloaded mp3 files?

Community iconc/linux@lemmy.ml by
Pirate2377@lemmy.zip

As someone who downloads or buys their music to listen to via VLC, it’s quite annoying when the volume level between files aren’t consistent. Especially when I’m unable to easily to change the volume like when I’m doing physical labor as an example. So it can go from a perfectly reasonable volume, to damaging my ears, and then to where I can barely hear. I was thinking of going in and manually editing them myself to be consistent amongst each other at some point, but then it got me thinking. Is there an application that will equalize the volume on your audio files for you? If not, would anyone else have a use for one besides me? I’d love to know either way.

Is it a bad practice to replace compiler warnings with a bunch of TODO notes?

Community iconc/programming@programming.dev by
SpiderUnderUrBed@lemmy.zip

I am using rust, but this applies to many other languages, I get warnings like, dead code, unused variables, and etc, and while I remove most of them, there are some im not sure of, I like running my program and there being 0 warnings, or 0 warnings as i scroll down my code, so for things im unsure of, i mark them so the compiler doesn’t put warnings there. I also add comments, starting with TODO:, it has some information about what to think about when i revisit it, also the todo’s gets highlighed in my IDE with my extension, but is this bad practice?

Distro Recommendation for Streaming and Video

Community iconc/linux@lemmy.ml by
thatonefebruary@piefed.social

I used to distro hop frequently before Linux was almost supported by many things. I preferred Fedora derivatives but Ubuntu pushed those out in the dev space. I switched to Arch because it was funny then a few years ago switched to EndeavorOS because it was easy. I currently can’t get things like OBS to work smoothly (when my display sleeps, screen captures have to be deleted and rebuilt), sharing my screen with basically any tool is a nightmare, and I’m just kinda tired of compiling fixes and deeply configuring. I’m spoiled by the work experience on a Mac where all of this stuff works and it’s POSIX compliant.

Mushroom cloud from an atomic bomb

Humans have always made tools - it’s why we have opposable thumbs along with the intelligence and dexterity to utilize them. Spiders are likewise built and programmed to make webs, and beavers to make dams. However, tools were always supposed to be a means to an end. A human end, not inhuman end. An end that is beneficial to human wellbeing, not simply generating more money while relationships break down, happiness declines, physical and mental health deteriorate, and governments tighten their control over our lives.

Internet isn’t a huge deal but it’d be nice in a pinch. I’m looking for an OS that’s easy to use, privacy & security. Any recommends/guides?

How I started to make customizable todo app and ended up building a VM where tasks are stateful executable programs

Community iconc/programming@programming.dev by
tracyspcy@lemmy.ml

Sometimes, there are moments in life then you feel loosing control over your life, when there is to much on a plate and all this overwhelms you, makes you anxious. For me, solution always was to use kind of “get things done” tools, to organize myself. I tried enormous amount of todo apps, even bought a paper todo, but this wasn’t enough this time. Every restriction in functionality, every missed feature made me feel I’m loosing control again. And one moment I gave up and decided it is time to make my own tool and make it right (in my understanding), i.e . a todo that is highly customazible and instead of hardcoded features can have any you want. Despite todo app is an anecdote and there are thousands of them, same as with an edit tool microsoft it is quite a challenging task to make a really good one.

Inbox message of mention in a comment I wasn't mentioned in

Basically I was tagged as mentioned in a comment, one of several in the thread, and got an inbox notification of it. It was about 20 min after the comment itself was posted, in a community I don’t interact with, with a user I don’t think I’ve ever interacted with before.

I just read how someone on RetroArch tries to improve documentation by using Copilot. But not in the sense as we might think. His approach is to let Copilot read the documentation and give him follow-up question a hypothetical developer might have. This also could be extended to normal code I guess, to pretend it being a student maybe and have it ask questions instead generating or making changes? I really like this approach.

Tried Connect since I used it for Lemmy, but no luck, keeps giving me “The page your browser tried to load could not be found” error when I try to log in.

My current rig is featuring an I7 10th gen and a nvidia 4070ti. Is there a distro that you recommend me to use as a linux beginner that is also good for gaming and streaming, that will work with my pc parts? Because I heard that intel and nvidia are famous for causing issues on Linux.
