We’re having a reshuffle of hardware, my partner is going to get a new (second hand) laptop for developer work, and I’ll get their old one which is an 8 year old HP with an i5 (they had an i7 one, until a drink accident warranted a cheap replacement at short notice).

Dynamic directory creation in GNU Make?

Community iconprogramming@programming.dev by

Hey, I’m trying to create a pipeline that takes files from a flat directory source/ that contains files with names formatted as yyyy-mm-dd-some-file-name.md and processes them with the output being created in destination/yyyy/mm/dd/some-file-name.md. I managed to string together an ugly script that converts the source path to destination path, but the problem is that make says that there is no rule to make the target. Here is my code so far:

Swapping out an old 2TB pcie 3 drive for a newer 2TB pcie 4 drive. I was leaning towards using dd, after shrinking the partition on the source drive so it doesn’t also ‘copy’ all the empty space. Have you done this recently? What was your method? Or is there a CachyOS/kde tool I may be unaware of?

I blame you guys, no really. I’ve been trying out Linux for 2 days now, just testing it on an old HP Elitebook laptop and now a Poco X3 Pro. There wasn’t an official distro for it but I kinda put a frankenstein version together based on an old guide online. Its hilarious. I predict that by this time next year I’ll be running Linux on everything. Its like finally getting my freedom back after having used Windows for almost 30 years. Before that I used Commodore Amiga (a 1200) exclusively, but had to hop over back then due to work creating some games for the PC and releasing those on CD-Rom.

When we talk about free and open source software it’s usually in technical terms - the source is available, anyone can inspect it, fork it, change it or contribute. But all those things only work and make sense in the context of a minimum level of honesty, good faith, reciprocity, patience and mutual recognition of each other’s humanity.

PieFed has a dizzying array of settings and options that instance admins can tweak. In this post I explain what those are and how they can be configured.

RAK WisMesh Tag Initial Thoughts (MeshCore)

Meshcore@feddit.org by
shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip

I have had my new RAK WisMesh Tag for about 15 hours so far and really like what I see. I do like the fact that it comes with a lanyard, although I feel as though the lanyard is too long, because when wearing it, the bottom of the node came down to the top of my belt. What I did instead is that I had a short chain from a pocket watch that did not work and so I used that instead and clipped it to my belt and if the node ever falls out of my pocket it will only go down as far as my knee and then the chain will catch it. Based on the battery drain overnight, I think I should get about five days on battery with the GPS turned off, which I like considering that my old Seeed T1000-E got three days and six hours with the GPS off. Since Meshcore-open does not currently have a background service and doesn’t stay connected to the node when the app is closed, having a buzzer on the RAK makes things much nicer.
